Privacy policy
Last updated October 21, 2026 · Beta version
The short version. We collect only what the app needs to run your daily study: your email to sign you in, your training setup, your progress, and the answers you give. We use AI (Claude, made by Anthropic) to give feedback on scenario answers, and it’s always labeled as AI. We don’t sell your data, show ads, or use tracking cookies. You must be 13 or older. You can delete your account and data anytime in the app.
1. Who we are
Alpha to Zulu (“we”, “us”) is a daily study app that helps student pilots practice for the oral portion of the FAA practical test (checkride). This policy covers the Alpha to Zulu app (including the web beta at beta.flyalphatozulu.com) and this website, flyalphatozulu.com.
Alpha to Zulu is currently in beta. We’ll update this policy before the app launches in the App Store and Google Play.
2. What we collect
Information you give us
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Email address | To create your account and send you sign-in codes. We don’t use passwords. |
| Age confirmation | You confirm you’re 13 or older before anything else is collected. We record that you confirmed and when. We don’t ask for your birth date. |
| Training setup | Your certificate track (for example Private Pilot ASEL), training stage, cockpit type (analog or glass), engine type, cards per day and, if you choose to add it, your checkride date. These pick which questions you see. |
| Study progress | Which cards you’ve seen, how you graded yourself (Missed, Partial, Nailed it), your daily decks, and your progress on each ACS task. This runs the spaced-repetition schedule and the ACS tab. |
| Scenario answers | The answer you type or dictate for the scenario of the day, and the feedback you get. We store your answer text with your account so you can see past results, and during the beta we review answers to improve the grading. |
| Ratings, reports and feedback | If you rate AI feedback, tap “Report an issue” on a card, or send feedback, we store what you send (and the card or scenario it’s about) so we can fix problems. |
| Emails to us | If you write to hello@, support@ or privacy@, we keep the conversation to answer you. |
Information collected automatically
- Sign-in token and settings on your device. The app keeps you signed in by storing a sign-in token in your browser or phone. It may also save display settings (like a color style) on your device. These aren’t used for tracking or advertising.
- AI usage records. Each time AI grades an answer, we record the date, the AI model used, how much text was processed and what it cost, so we can manage costs and limits.
- Basic technical data. Our hosting providers keep standard server logs (such as IP address, browser type and the time of a request) for security and to keep the service running. If we use Cloudflare Web Analytics on this website, it counts page visits without cookies and without tracking you across other sites.
What we don’t collect
- No passwords, payment card numbers, government ID numbers or FAA certificate numbers.
- No voice recordings. See Speaking your answers.
- No precise location, contacts or photos.
3. How we use it
- To run the app: sign you in, build your daily cards and scenario, track your progress and show your ACS tab.
- To give AI feedback on your scenario answers, if you use that feature.
- To fix errors in our content and improve the app, using reports, feedback, ratings and (during the beta) scenario answers.
- To keep the service secure and to prevent abuse, including daily limits on AI grading.
- To answer your emails and send messages about your account or the service. We won’t send marketing email unless you ask for it, and you can stop it anytime.
4. AI use and teen users
Alpha to Zulu uses Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, for one feature: feedback on your scenario-of-the-day answers (a Pro feature; every beta tester has it). Here’s how it works and the commitments we make.
- What’s sent: when you ask for AI feedback, our server sends your answer text, the scenario and its reviewed Points to Hit to Anthropic. Your email address and name are not sent.
- What it does: it checks your answer against the Points to Hit and writes short feedback. It doesn’t chat, browse the web, or answer other questions.
- Always labeled: anything written by AI is labeled in the app (for example “Graded by AI (Claude)”). We never present AI feedback as if a person or CFI wrote it.
- It can be wrong. AI feedback is practice only. Your CFI and the examiner have the final word, and every scenario links to its FAA sources.
- Anthropic’s handling: Anthropic processes this data to provide the service to us under its commercial terms and privacy policy. Under those terms, Anthropic does not use it to train its models.
- Optional: you can study with cards, scenarios and the ACS tab without ever using AI feedback.
Our commitments for users under 18
Alpha to Zulu may be used by teenagers aged 13 to 17, since many student pilots start young. Anthropic requires organizations that offer AI features to minors to put safeguards in place, and we follow those requirements. Specifically, we:
- require every user to confirm they’re 13 or older before any other information is collected;
- tell users clearly, every time, when they’re seeing AI-generated content;
- keep the AI narrow: it only grades answers against reviewed content, with no open-ended chat;
- monitor AI usage, keep limits on how often it can be used, and review reports users send from the app;
- comply with applicable child-safety and privacy laws, including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA); and
- don’t sell personal information or show advertising to anyone, including teens.
If you see AI output that seems wrong, unsafe or inappropriate, tap “Report an issue” in the app or email [email protected].
5. Speaking your answers
You can type your scenario answer or speak it. When you speak, your words are turned into text by your browser or phone, and only that text is sent to us. We never receive or store a recording of your voice.
Please be aware that the speech-to-text step is done by your browser or phone, not by us, and it may send your audio to its maker’s speech service to do the conversion. For example, Google Chrome may send audio to Google, and Safari may send audio to Apple. That processing is covered by Google’s or Apple’s privacy policies, not this one. If you’d rather not use it, you can always type your answer.
6. Who we share it with
We share information only with service providers that help us run Alpha to Zulu, and only what each one needs:
| Provider | What they do | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Hosts our database, sign-in and server functions | All account and study data described above |
| Anthropic | AI feedback on scenario answers (Claude) | Your answer text and the scenario, when you ask for AI feedback |
| Resend | Sends sign-in code emails | Your email address and the sign-in code |
| Cloudflare | Hosts this website and the web beta; handles our email routing | Standard request logs; emails you send to our addresses |
| Google (Workspace or Gmail) | Our email inbox | Emails you send us |
We may also share information if required by law, to protect the safety of our users or others, or as part of a sale or reorganization of the business (in which case this policy would continue to apply to your information).
7. What we don’t do
- We don’t sell or rent your personal information.
- We don’t show ads, and we don’t share your data for targeted advertising.
- We don’t use tracking cookies or third-party ad trackers.
- We don’t make your profile, answers or progress public.
8. Age requirements and users under 18
- You must be 13 or older to use Alpha to Zulu. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn we have, we’ll delete it. If you believe a child under 13 has an account, email [email protected].
- If you’re 13 to 17, please review this policy with a parent or guardian before signing up.
- Parents and guardians of a user under 18 can ask us to see or delete that user’s information by emailing [email protected]. We’ll take reasonable steps to confirm the request before acting on it.
9. How long we keep it
- Account and study data (your email, setup, progress, scenario answers and AI feedback) are kept while you have an account, and deleted when you delete your account.
- Reports, feedback and AI ratings you send are kept after you delete your account so we can still fix the content, but your account ID is removed from them. Please don’t include personal details in them.
- AI usage and cost records are kept for our accounting; your account ID is removed from them when you delete your account.
- Backups held by our database provider may keep deleted data for a short period before it’s overwritten.
- Beta: we may reset beta data when the beta ends or when the app moves to its launch servers. We’ll tell testers before we do.
10. Deleting your account
You can delete your account in the app: Settings → Delete account. This permanently deletes your account and the study data linked to it, as described above. If you can’t get into the app, email [email protected] from the address on your account and we’ll delete it for you. See also Delete your account.
11. Your choices and rights
You can see and change your training setup in Settings, choose whether to use AI feedback or speech input, and delete your account at any time. You can also email us to:
- get a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
- correct information that’s wrong; or
- delete your information.
Depending on where you live (for example California or another US state with a privacy law), you may have additional rights, and you won’t be treated differently for using them. Email [email protected] and we’ll respond within the time the law requires.
12. Security and where data is stored
Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Our database uses access rules so each user can only read and write their own study data, and our AI and other secret keys are kept only on our servers, never in the app. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will notify you as required by law if a breach affects it.
Alpha to Zulu is run from the United States, and your information is stored and processed in the United States.
13. Changes to this policy
We’ll update this policy as the app grows (for example before the App Store and Google Play launch, or when we add purchases). We’ll change the date at the top, and if a change is significant we’ll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
